Edwin Leonard "Ed" Smith, 85 of Graham passed away Saturday May 21, 2016 at Peak Resources in Graham. 

Ed was born in Alamance County on December 14, 1930 the son of George Leonard and Norah Poole Smith. He was a 1949 graduate of Graham High School where he was inducted into the Graham Sports Hall of Fame for his time spent playing with the school's 1949 undefeated football team. They won the Hosiery Bowl that year. He was a US Navy Korean war veteran serving our country from 1950 until 1954. Ed graduated from Elon University with a degree in business and became an insurance agent and partner with G.L. Smith and Associates. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Barbara Ann Shoffner as well as a brother Rev. William Poole Smith. 

Surviving are his wife Betty Jo Miller-Smith of the home; two sons, Eric Smith of Burlington and Brad Smith of Durham; step children, Taryn Miller of Greensboro, Elizabeth Miller Coble and husband "G" of Graham, Kim Adkins and husband James of Graham, Kay Mount of Ringgold, Ga., Kelly Joe Bates and husband Gil of Rocky Top, TN and Brenda Callaham of Pickens, SC; 34 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday at Omega Funeral Service & Crematory Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
