Susan Hunt Johnson passed away on Tuesday May 25, 2021 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina after several months of declining health. Susan’s extended family is grateful for the compassionate care she received from the staff of Baptist Hospital and for the assistance provided to her by her generous and kind cousin Jean Swaim DeSaix and Jean’s husband Pete DeSaix.
Susan was born on September 23, 1944 in Durham, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father James Harris Johnson, Jr., mother Mary Grace Hunt Johnson, and brother James Harris Johnson, III. Sue was survived by her beloved cousins Lou Grubb Adkins, Gil Swaim, Jean Swaim DeSaix, and Cissy Hunt Redwine and by her nephew James Hunt Johnson and niece Cordelia Johnson Barrick.
After graduating from Durham High School in 1962, Susan matriculated to Stratford College and graduated with an Associate Degree in 1965. She later received a teaching degree from Elon College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from North Carolina Central University. Susan followed in her mother’s footsteps when she embarked upon her own career as a Registered Nurse. In addition, Susan was a gifted and talented artist. She made beautiful baskets which she sold at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market where she made many friends. Susan also worked with fabrics and was a skilled quilter.
Susan was devoted to her pets: her two cats, her dog and especially her Macaw, Claribel, who was her companion for decades. Susan’s many friends, co-workers, and supporters provided steadfast and unwavering support for her especially in later years as her health declined. A special thank you is extended to Christina Brown, Rebecca Tucker, and the network of veterinarians who helped move Claribel to the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary in Wilmington, North Carolina.
A memorial service for Susan Hunt Johnson is planned and will be arranged at a later date.
