Patricia Barrett Obituary

Patricia Rita Barrett, 77, of Burlington, NC, died at her home on March 26, 2024, after a brief struggle with cancer.

Patricia was born in Washington, DC, on August 15, 1946, to Elizabeth Rita Murphy Barrett and Loyle Richard Barrett. She was raised in Alexandria, VA, and graduated from Mary Washington College in 1967. After spending time in the Washington, DC, and Miami Beach, FL, areas, Patricia settled in Charlottesville, VA, and then Frederick, MD, where she worked for the United States Postal Service for many years before retiring to the Asheville (Canton), NC, area. She had recently moved to Burlington, NC.

Patricia had a generous spirit and enjoyed spending time with family and her many friends. She had a lifelong interest in matters of spirituality, independent education, vegetarianism, and health and healing. Patricia moved often in her lifetime, which built in her a strong facility at establishing a home and nurturing community. She was a devoted grandmother, was dedicated to the wellbeing of others and cared deeply for her many friends. Patricia was an environmentalist and had a special love for her garden, her plants, and nature. Her great joy was taking walks with her dog in the woods, by lakes, and especially at the ocean.

She is survived by: her daughters Alice Frances Welsh Hendricks (Bracken Hendricks) from her marriage to Robert William Welsh, Jr., and her daughter Suchitra Darshana Rose Swift (Geoffrey Nazzaro) from her marriage to Jonathan Charles Swift; five grandchildren: Galen Hendricks, Clea Hendricks, Oden Nazzaro Swift, Emmaline Nazzaro Swift and Hollis Nazzaro Swift; a brother, Richard Barrett; a sister Teresa Spurr, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

A memorial service will be planned by her daughters at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Breast Cancer Research Foundation www.bcrf.org
The Nature Conservancy www.nature.org
