Joseph Walter Wood, Jr. 65, of Burlington, N.C. passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at AuthoraCare Collective Hospice Home.
Joe was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Jan. 10, 1958, the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Avril (Gibb) Wood. Joe spent his career in the transportation industry, first as a deckhand on a tugboat in New York City, then as a train conductor for New Jersey Transit and for the last 20 years as long haul truck driver. He was a proud union member and organizer wherever he worked. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He enjoyed playing the ukulele and making YouTube videos, bowling with his wife and riding his motorcycle. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandkids.
Joe is survived by his wife, Eva, and daughters Mary (John Leonard) of Hazlet, N.J. and Jane Ball (Labraske) of Honolulu, HI, and son Warren Gumbs (Tiffany) of Burlington, grandchildren Victoria, David, and Ahniya Ball of Honolulu, Destiny Majors and Sophia and Bella Gumbs of Burlington, sisters Deborah Wood of Tallahassee, Fl., Florida, Margaret of Dayton, NV., and Avril of Middletown, N.J. and brothers Chris of Wall Township, N.J. , Alec of Overland Park, KS, and John of Fredericksburg, Va. and his nephew and nieces. He will be remembered and missed by too many friends to count.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the VFW 18 Davern Ave Hazlet NJ 07730 on December 1st from 4pm-8pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to AuthoraCare.org. You may sign an online register book at www.omegafsc.com. Arrangements are in care of Omega Funeral Service & Crematory.
