James Ayers Obituary

Captain James “Jim” R. Ayers of Washington, DC, passed away in hospice on December 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Deborah M. Ayres, his brother-in-law, John H. Muench, and their children. Jim was a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran who served as a Naval Aviator and a flight instructor for nearly three decades.

Jim was born on April 28, 1944, and always felt a keen sense of duty to his country. After high school, he attended and graduated from Georgia Military Academy in Milledgeville, Georgia. Upon graduation, Jim immediately began his flight training. After successfully completing flight training, he received his commission. Soon thereafter, Jim began his tours of duty in Vietnam, where he achieved the rank of Navy Captain.  During his service, Jim served on three different ships: The America, The Independence, and The Midway. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam, with his active service spanning 10 years from August 28, 1966, until June 30, 1976. Afterward, Jim served as a drilling Reservist until his retirement in 1995.

Jim enjoyed his friends and stayed in touch with those from his Vietnam days, often meeting at Bully’s in San Diego during the decades after the war. After his marriage to Deborah, Jim served as a responsible and devoted stepfather to her daughter and attended to Deborah’s parents’ needs as they aged and incurred medical disabilities.

After leaving the Navy, Jim began his second career owning and operating a McDonalds franchise. Deborah frequently came in to assist Jim to ensure the success of the business, especially during promotions.

Jim’s funeral will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date to be determined.
