Garvey "Wayne" Layell

Garvey "Wayne” Layell, 72, of 10015 NC-49, Liberty, NC passed away peacefully at his residence on October 24, 2023.

A native of Alamance County, NC, he was born on December 3, 1950 and was the son of the late Ola Pruitt and Garvey Dalton Layell. He was a Vietnam Veteran, proudly serving the US Army from 1969 until honorably discharged in 1971. After which he worked in the textile industry for over thirty years. He was an enthusiastic cut up, drawing happiness from making others laugh until the end. He regretfully never bought stock in Dr. Pepper… he kept them in business.

He was married to Mrs. Diane Layell for 43 years until her death in 2015. He is survived by his wife, Delores “Lucy ” Walker whom he married December 18, 2018; daughter, Tracy Layell and her husband, Chief Warrant Officer Cory Arend of the US Coast Guard, currently stationed in St. Louis, MO; his grandchildren, Sydney, 27 and Carys, 19; stepdaughter Krystle and her husband Brian Turner of Liberty, NC and their son Mason, 13; stepson Christopher Butler and his wife, Courtney of Greensboro, and their son Junior, 10. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Shirley Gurkin of Graham, NC, and Christine McCray of Washington D.C.

His decorations include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him. 

A celebration of life service will be held at 4 pm on October 27, 2023 at the VFW Post 10607 634 W Webb Ave, Burlington, NC 27217.
