David “Babe” Newell, 84, of McLeansville, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at his residence after a 30 year battle fighting aggressive cancer.
Babe was born and raised in Greensboro, NC on March 18, 1939. The son of the late Willis and Mary Matkins Newell. He was the owner & operator of Newell’s Garage for 52 years. Prior to that he was employed by Western Electric and General Tire. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He was a former member of the McLeansville Wildlife Club and an Icon to the community often referred to as the Mayor of McLeansville. He enjoyed helping people, yard work, gardening and most, loved his family and friends often cutting up with everyone. He was a dirt track racer who ended his racing career in the early 80’s in Hobby and Modified divisions as the #66 with North State Chevrolet.
Surviving are his wife, Judy, daughter, Kelly Newell Kernodle, grandson, Avery Cox and granddaughter, Brianna Kernodle. Brother, Troy Newell Sr (Danease), Sister, Ann Bowers (Ronnie), and was preceded in death by his brother John Newell (Louise, still living).
The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 31st from 3-7pm at Peace Lutheran Church, Gibsonville. A private Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 17th by invitation only.
