Robert Gary Boyer passed away on July 4, 2018 at age 57 after several years of declining health. Born in Bethesda, Maryland on September 18, 1960 to Robert Gene Boyer and Helen Frances Boyer (née Gilley), Robert served in the Navy as a young man. He graduated summa cum laude from UNC Greensboro with a Bachelor of the Arts in Media Studies. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn, and his younger brother, Lonnie Boyer. Robert enjoyed performing in musical theater, rooting for the Orioles, and singing with local bands. He was also a member of the Professional Putters Association. Robert worked as a journalist at several North Carolina papers, including the Times-News of Burlington and the High Point Enterprise, winning several awards on state and national levels for his articles. Before his illness, Robert was writing a book about one of North Carolina’s greatest forgotten baseball players, Charley Jones. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration. A wake will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 8 at 220 Green Street, Elon, NC 27244.
