Lawrence Baron Charny, 75, passed away Tuesday, February 12th in Pittsboro, NC after a short battle with lung cancer.
He leaves behind his wife Carol, his daughter Alison, his son-in-law William, his two sisters Charlotte and Irene, and his nephews Adam, Jesse, Alexander, Nicolai, and William.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Larry (as he was known to his friends) received his BA in English Literature from Brooklyn College, his Masters in Education Administration from NYU and a second Masters in Communication at The New School.
He was a Special Education teacher at Bellevue Hospital before becoming an Assistant Principal at the school.
Following his retirement from NYC Board of Education, Larry worked as a consultant for the Board of Education Medicaid Special Projects Unit, with the goal of teaching schools how to properly file medicaid claims to ensure special needs students receive all of the benefits to which they were entitled. A tried and true New Yorker, Larry and his wife retired to Chapel Hill, NC where he taught continuing education film courses at Duke University (OLLY). This included a course on Woody Allen’s filmography (a course whose popularity lead to two classes being taught concurrently), a class on the Hollywood blacklist during the McCarthy era, and a class on the screenplays of George S. Kaufman.
With an unfaltering sense of humor and endless curiosity, Larry’s last passion project was a book he began on Marlon Brando.
A funeral service was held February 15 at Judea Reform Congregation, Durham, NC. Donations may be made to https://cwsrdu.org/give/
