Grace Paden

Grace Auer Paden, 84, died at Twin Lakes in Burlington, NC on September 5, 2019. She was born on August 21, 1935 in Orange, NJ, to Catherine and James McElwee, the oldest of five children, and lived in Newark NJ.  She was graduated from St. Michael’s High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Newark State College in 1957.

 She married John Parsons Auer of Glen Ridge, NJ and moved to Los Angeles, CA where she taught fourth grade in Northridge. In 1958, the Auers moved back to Glen Ridge, NJ, and during the next 10 years, had five children.  Grace was an active member of the Junior League of Newark.  In 1971, the family moved to the Pittsburg, PA area, and there, Grace studied and worked in Interior Design and developed her own business.

 In 1981, the family moved to Water Island, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, where Grace pursued her career working for the firm Interiors in St. Thomas for several years.

 In 1993, Grace moved to Moraga, CA where she married Robert Hayes Paden.  She continued her Interior Design profession in the Bay Area and in the ensuing years, she and Robert travelled to many places throughout the world. Grace and Robert retired to Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC in 2011 where they have been active members of the community and enjoyed many friends and activities.  Grace was a member of the Quilting Group at Twin Lakes.

Grace is survived by her husband Robert, her daughters Kristen Schweikert of Asheville NC and Allison Horsey of Matthews, NC,  her sons Brett Auer of Hartwell, GA, and Whitney Auer of Troutman, NC,  and step-son Hayes Paden of Asheville, NC, and 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  She was pre-deceased by her son, Eric Auer of St. Thomas, USVI.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday at the May-Foley Chapel in Twin Lakes. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.omegafsc.com. Arrangements are in the care of Omega Funeral Service & Crematory.
