Welcome to the memorial page for

Vivian Oliver Scott

August 9, 2016

Vivian Scott, 88, of Burlington, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016 following a stroke.  Vivian was born the first of 13 children of Sadie and Edgar Oliver of Alamance County, NC, on March 1, 1928.  Following her graduation from Rex Nursing School in Raleigh, NC, in 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Ludwig Scott, DDS.  She gave birth to three of her children, Mack, Fred, and Kathy while her husband completed dental school.  Her fourth child, Dawn, was born in Burlington where he established his dental practice.

Vivian became very involved in the Burlington community while working as a Registered Nurse.  She was a charter member of the Alamance General Hospital Auxiliary, volunteered as the nurse for Camp Green Leaves (for mentally and physically disabled children) and the Red Cross Blood Mobile, and served in various roles, including Regional President, for the North Carolina Nurse's Association.  In her later years, she taught nursing at Alamance Community College.  In addition to her advocacy on behalf of the nursing profession, she also was an active member of the Burlington Business and Professional Women’s Club.

She loved birdwatching, sewing and gardening, and was a member of two garden clubs.  She was a great cook and often contributed her cooking skills to community fundraisers.  Her children have wonderful stories about trying to keep the arrival of her baked goods secret from their college and military friends, because her pound cake would disappear upon its discovery by others.

Her grandchildren all called her “Mur” and she loved them with all her heart.  They are Cameron Scott of Elon, NC, Reece Raxter of Coast Guard Station Indian River, Delaware, and Lena Raxter of Vancouver, Canada.

Her first son, Mack, predeceased her.  Fred lives in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Kathy and her husband, Pat Mitchell, live in Hillsboro, Oregon. Dawn lives with her husband, Ronald Raxter, in Raleigh, NC.

Vivian was a caregiver to her core.  She cared for her children and grandchildren.  She cared for her parents.  She cared for all of her brothers and sisters - Harold (Sonny), Allen, Bobby, Jeanette, Johnny, Edna, Gene, Ann, Jack, Gordon, Forrest, and Jane (and all of their spouses, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews).  She cared for her friends, her neighbors, her community and while working as a Registered Nurse, her patients.  She cared about people, so she devoted her life to all those she cared about.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Karen Patterson and her assisted living staff for the loving care they provided to Vivian and the support they provided to the family.

A Celebration of her life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 13, 2016, at the Union Ridge Church with Rev. Dan Ficklin officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Home of Alamance and Caswell Counties, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
