John Theodore Vossers, Jr.

John Theodore Vossers, Jr., 89 of Greensboro, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 27, 2017.

 

John was born in Galion, OH on May 25, 1928 the son of the late John Theodore Vossers, Sr. and Nellie Ooijhuizen Vossers.  He was a US Army WWII Veteran serving in the occupation of Japan. After his military service John graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a B.A. Degree. He lettered in Varsity Football and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. In 2005 John was inducted into the Ohio Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame. John and Betty met and married at OWU and after several moves, settled in Erie (Lawrence Park), PA. John worked in finance for General Electric for 40 years retiring in 1991. In 2003 he and his wife moved to Bradenton, FL and in 2016 to Greensboro, NC.

 

John was Treasurer of Iroquois School District for 16 years, a member of GE Elfun Society, GE Exempt Retirees, GE Quarter Century Club, and a member of the Lawrence Park Golf Club. While in Florida he served as an AARP Tax Aide.  He enjoyed golf and traveling.  John and Betty were active members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Erie, Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, and Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church in Greensboro.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Garret, Francis and Martin Vossers and sisters Nellie Rugg, Dorothy Stowe and Christina Cahill.

 

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Vossers; children, Vickie L. Slomski and husband Walter of Marion Center, PA, Nancy V. Kelly and husband Jack of Southbury, CT and Dr. John T. Vossers, III and wife Anne of Burlington, NC; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

A Celebration of Life Service is being planned for a later date. The family asks that memorials be made to Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church Greensboro, NC or to the Salvation Army.  Sign an online register book at www.omegafsc.com. Arrangements are in the care of Omega Funeral Service & Crematory.
